Hello everyone!
I am hoping I can test my own understanding of insured money letters (wertbriefe) here.
Below is an item postmarked Volksmarsdorf on August 17, 1884, arriving at Eilenburg on August 18.
The distance is about 23 km ( less than 10 meilen), so the postage cost for wertbriefe was 20 pfennig.
The enclosed moneys totaled 5762 marks and 20 pfennig, which required 5 pfennig x 20 times the rate per 300 marks of insured value.
Total postage due was 1 mark 2 pfennig payed in postage stamps. The red marking, partly under the stamps shows this amount (120).
The weight is shown at the top left as 59.2 grams. Next to that are the initials E.B. - would this be the postal clerk?
It is my understanding that these rates start January 1, 1875 and terminate on Sep 30, 1919 - is that end date correct?
Also, I look at the postage rate section in Michel and I don't find the same rates there, so I am a little confused, but may be looking at the wrong thing.
